Working with Young People and Emotions
This workshop assists youth workers to engage young people to consider the appropriateness of their expressions of anger and to provide young people with alternative strategies for expressing strong emotions. The content of the workshop focuses on assisting young people to recognise that anger is an emotion along with all other emotions and that expressing anger in a constructive way is possible and most certainly achieves a better outcome. This workshop takes participants through the 3 stage cognitive process of anger management training for young people. The workshop is supported by video and workbook resources. It is an opportunity to apply theory and practice application of the intervention training stages.
Participants will be able to:
- Apply the three stage cognitive anger management process to assist young people to be able to manage and express anger constructively
- Assess the suitability of the young person to participate in the anger management process
- Use a range of tools to assist young people to express their emotions positively
Youth Participation
This workshop is designed to assist people working with young people in communities to achieve “real” youth participation. Young people often attend, participate and engage in community activities. However, to genuinely participate in the community means adults forming partnerships with young people in decision making and determination of youth participation in communities. Adults as mentors and partners with young people can create “Real Youth Participation opportunities” by allocating resources, time, training and support. True youth participation has to be meaningful to young people and this can only be achieved when young people feel equal partners in the process and valued as participants.
Participants will be able to:
- Engage young people in youth participation
- Understand the roles adults play in youth participation
- Support young people to take collective action
- Recognise different levels of participation
- Apply strategies to consult with young people in communities to achieve young peoples goals
- Support the training and up-skilling of young people to be able to participate as partners with adults in community action
- Consider two theories of youth participation
